Contra NES – Frustratingly Addicting or Rage Quit?
A quick peruse of a Google search for "Best NES Games of All Time" will yield some interesting results. Mostly, you will find blogs and videos, all titled with maximum SEO strategy in mind. Reading a few of them, you will find opinions like Zelda, Mario, Mega Man and Metroid cracking the top 5.
What you won't find is many saying Contra is the leader. Sure, it's not rare and many gamers are familiar with the game, but you will not find it being in many blogger's top 10.
But why not? Perhaps it's the side-scrolling, third-person shooter style gameplay. Maybe there are more gamers that prefer RPG's or adventure games. Or maybe it's because the game is just frustratingly difficult!
For those who have played the game and perhaps even love it; the relationship has been rocky. Only the strong have survived. Many give up, throw the controller to the floor and then plug in Super Mario 3 for a much slower gameplay.
It takes repetition, patience and a worthy partner to help you get through the humdrum of Contra. For those brave enough to take on the task, rewards beyond measure await. Actually, just a few sleepless nights, but you feel triumphant none the less.
With the basic controls of jump, duck and shoot, gameplay is simple in nature but takes time to master maneuvering through each level where balls of laser energy come flying at you from every angle. Once you can perfect the jump flip + shoot combo, you're ready to take the next step. Seriously, just play the first few levels on repeat until you feel like you've got it down.
If you have turned away from Contra for any reason, consider giving it another try. Grab a good friend, preferably one that has free time and patience, and fire up the run n' gun duo again. Make sure you enter up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, start at the opening screen to give yourself 30 lives and a needed handicap.
